  • Our Safavid design portrays a leather filigree pattern with handcrafted motifs that preserves the elegance and style of the Islamic Golden Age, even in our modern context.

Associated with this era of artistic excellence, Persian Safavid-style designs represented a high point in book arts. These bindings often featured central designs of medallions, quadrants, floral and animal motifs, pentagonal flap closures, and elaborately decorated "doublures" (inner covers), along with delicate creations made of cut leather, colored paper, and gilding. Above all, symmetry is the hallmark of this style. The original binding of this specific design used reddish-brown goatskin, real gold, lacquer, and paint to achieve balance in its creation.

Dating back to the 17th century, this work of art comes from the rich craft tradition inspired by Shah Abbas the Great, the Fifth Shah of the Safavid Dynasty, during the period known as the Golden Age of Islamic Art (750 to the 16th century). He recognized the commercial benefits of encouraging the arts, and thus tile work, pottery, and textile crafts flourished. Illustrated manuscripts also became a thriving industry, and great attention was paid to the craft of bookbinding and design.

Although Safavid rule ended in 1736, they left a great and lasting legacy by reviving and establishing Persia as both an economic and artistic powerhouse. Among the many jewels of this ancient period and culture, decorative bookbinding shines particularly bright, and we are honored to bring it back to everyday life in our Safavid series.

  • Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality notebooks that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured and bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a binding technique that is economical for the manufacturer but eventually leads to page loss) but are instead all sewn.

All Paperblanks notebooks are bound using two methods. They are either hand-sewn using 'Coptic' binding, which originated in 4th-century Egypt, or Smythe-sewn, the most durable binding technique, which allows the notebook to lie flat without page loss.

All Paperblanks notebooks use acid-free, archival-quality, high-opacity, finely laid writing paper. Their notebooks also feature a ribbon page marker and an inner pocket inside the back cover to store your notes.
