  • Our beautiful magenta and gold Bijou design is a true gem in the history of bookbinding. Originally produced in France, this book was designed to hold the Pars Hiemalis section of the Paris Breviary. This was the winter portion of a book containing the liturgical rites of the Catholic Church throughout the church year - including the advent to equinox (or solstice) portion.

Bound in red Morocco leather by an anonymous Parisian workshop with gold filigree and large pointillé dots, the publication was printed by S. and G. Cramoisy in 1645. As one of the most powerful booksellers of the period, S. and G. Cramoisy were among the first lay printers to take over the printing of liturgical works after authority was transferred from the Church itself to lay workshops in 1618. However, this volume was likely produced for a book collector rather than for use in service. It has been in the collection of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France since the Second Empire (1865-1870).

With such brilliant filigree work, it is easy to understand why a collector would order such a piece and why the Bibliothèque Nationale de France has proudly kept it in its collection for the last two centuries.

  • Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality journals that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured, bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a binding technique that is economical for the manufacturer but eventually leads to page loss) but are instead all sewn.

All Paperblanks journals are bound using one of two methods. They are either hand-sewn using 'Coptic' binding, which originated in 4th-century Egypt, or Smyth sewn, the most durable binding technique, which allows the journal to open flat without page loss.

All Paperblanks journals use acid-free, archival-quality, high-opacity laid writing paper. Their journals also include a ribbon page marker and an inner pocket inside the back cover to store your notes.
