  • Originally bound in Paris, France, in 1688, the book that inspired our Equinoxe series contained many of the rituals and ceremonies to be observed during the week leading up to Easter, the most important period in the Christian calendar. To honor the content appropriately, the complex rules governing life during this period were often housed in significant and ornate bindings. This version of L'office de la Semaine Sainte (Office of Holy Week) was particularly well-regarded, as it was translated by the noted French clergyman and translator Michel de Marolles. Sadly, he passed away in 1681 and never saw the beautiful leather binding, stamped with scrollwork motifs and gilded, that contained his work.

The gold-tooled decoration adorning this cover is a style known as "fanfare," an elaborate, hand-tooled pattern with gilt-edged borders. Particularly popular in the early 1700s, this style dates back to the early 1500s and required immense skill from the bookbinder. Due to the complexity and expense associated with this gold work, the technique was reserved for decorating books of great importance.

Blue, the color of the sky, is often thought to symbolize heaven, and we felt that this celestial cover design appropriately represented the original content of the binding upon which it is based.

In cultures around the world, the first full moon after the spring equinox is considered a sacred time, and for this reason, this period can hold great significance even for non-Christians. It is this universal connection that inspired us to choose the name "Equinox" for this rich and luxurious design.

  • Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality notebooks that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured, bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a binding technique that is economical for the manufacturer but eventually leads to page loss) but are instead all sewn.

All Paperblanks notebooks are bound using two methods. They are either hand-sewn using 'Coptic' binding, which originated in 4th-century Egypt, or Smyth sewn, the most durable binding technique, which allows the notebook to lie flat without page loss.

All Paperblanks notebooks use acid-free, archival-quality, high-opacity, fine-laid writing paper. The notebooks also feature a ribbon bookmark and an inner pocket inside the back cover to store your notes.
