  • Nobility and elegance reach new heights in this lush design. Originally crafted by Queens' Binder A, one of the most prolific bookbinders of the Restoration period, the binding housed Richard Allestree’s The Government of the Tongue. The balance of open space and intricate elements, such as the magnificent frame and harmonious small stars, makes it a shining jewel of 17th-century English bookbinding.

“Queens' Binder” was a name given by G.D. Hobson to a small group of English bookbinders during the “Golden Age of English Bookbinding.” These binders were known for having pointille outlines instead of the floral curls that were much more commonly used at the time. Modern research indicates that the Queens' Binder was actually four separate shops, and that individual binders like “A” could even refer to multiple craftsmen.

While the name or names of the binder “A” remain unknown, it is thought that at least one of the artists was William Nott, a prominent figure in the book trade who operated as a bookseller, stationer and publisher. The quality of the bindings attributed to A also varies significantly, but there is no question about the excellence of this particular piece. The Government of the Tongue was an important work in its time, and as Provost of Eton College, Allestree could demand the highest quality for its publication.

Today, the original binding is part of the Henry Davis gift at the British Library. We are delighted to have had the opportunity to return it to its original glory for this Paperblanks design.

  • Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality notebooks that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured and bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a binding technique that is economical for the manufacturer but eventually leads to page loss) but are instead all sewn.

All Paperblanks notebooks are bound using two methods. They are either hand-sewn using 'Coptic' binding, which originated in 4th-century Egypt, or Smyth sewn, the most durable binding technique, which allows the notebook to open flat without page loss.

All Paperblanks notebooks use acid-free, archival-quality, fine-laid writing paper with high opacity. Their notebooks also feature a ribbon page marker and an interior pocket inside the back cover for storing your notes.
