  • Cover design encompasses the traditions and innovations that have persisted in bookbinding for centuries. While some of these designs are vibrant examples of specific trends in the field, others more simply reflect a sense of elegance and taste. With its simple borders, orderly patterns and delicate garlands, this Iron & Twine edition represents just that kind of relaxed yet undeniable beauty.

The original book used to create this cover contained a selection of prayers written by Maria Joseph Clement Kaukol, secretary to the Archbishop-Elector of Cologne, Clement Augustus. Only a limited number of copies were bound, allowing the archbishop to present them as exclusive gifts to his friends. The book was created in 1729, most likely in Cologne or Bonn, and was embellished with engravings, calligraphic inscriptions and ornamental vignettes. As for the cover itself, the simple strips of the double frame are decorated with Rococo-style stylized vines with serpentine shapes and flourishes that resemble a piece of twisted twine.

The original binding reproduced for our Iron & Twine series was made of brick-red dyed goatskin, but for this cover, we have enriched the marble appearance of the leather with a light cream tone.

  • Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality notebooks that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured and bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a binding technique that is economical for the manufacturer but eventually leads to page loss) but are instead all sewn.

All Paperblanks notebooks are bound using two methods. They are either hand-sewn using 'Coptic' binding, which dates back to 4th-century Egypt, or Smyth sewn, the most durable binding technique, which allows the notebook to lie flat without page loss.

All Paperblanks notebooks use acid-free, archival-quality, high-opacity, finely laid writing paper. Their notebooks also feature a ribbon page marker and an inner pocket inside the back cover to store your notes.
