  • Our Grolier design is inspired by a gold-tooled brown leather binding featuring an interlacing curved design that fills a six-pointed star, one of Jean Grolier’s greatest commissions. Produced sometime between 1555 and 1565, the magnificent book cover is the work of a Parisian shop known as Grolier’s Last Binder. This name was aptly given as they were the artisans who produced most of the works Grolier commissioned toward the end of his life.

Jean Grolier’s collection is an interesting example in the history of bookbinding because his name, rather than the names of the craftsmen, became synonymous with magnificent and highly influential designs. Although not a binder himself, Grolier is referred to as one of the "fathers" of modern bookbinding, as his commissions became famous for their geometric and arabesque patterns. Our marble binding, enriched with gold dust and tooling, is an ideal example of the style for which he is so famous. It was originally designed to house a revised and improved manuscript of an ancient opera by Marcus Tullius Cicero.

Jean Grolier’s library has stood the test of time and is still considered one of the finest private collections ever held. With nearly 3,000 volumes to his name, Jean Grolier was a true bibliophile, and his passion was not only for the books themselves but for sharing them with others. For this reason, his book collection was divided between those he commissioned for himself and those he acquired or was given. At his death in 1565, he possessed one of the largest and most comprehensive private libraries in the world, and his influence on and passion for bookbinding continue to inspire artists, readers, and collectors today.

  • Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality notebooks that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured and bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a binding technique that, while economical for the manufacturer, eventually leads to page loss) but are instead all sewn.

All Paperblanks notebooks are bound using two methods. They are either hand-sewn using the 'Coptic' binding that originated in 4th-century Egypt or Smyth sewn, the most durable binding technique, which allows the notebook to open flat without page loss.

All Paperblanks notebooks use acid-free, archival-quality, fine-laid writing paper with high opacity. Their notebooks also feature a ribbon bookmark and an interior pocket inside the back cover for storing your notes.
