  • Legend has it that hanging a wooden Happiness Bird above one's hearth brings health and good fortune to those living in its warm embrace.

Artist Nadezhda Sokolova, also known as Nadya Sokolova, has drawn inspiration from this classic story of Russian folklore and brought new life to the birds of legend. Using her unique batik painting style on silk, Sokolova has captured the warm and sunny essence of the legend.

According to the story, also known as the "wood shaving bird," one day in the Northern Arkhangelsk province, a hunter returned home to his sick son, who was suffering alone in the cold with no one to help him. The child begged to see the sun, but the father had nothing to offer but a small fire. When the fire died down, the father decided to carve a bird for his son out of the glowing embers. When he hung the carving above his son's bed, it miraculously came to life, and the child cried out, "Look, the sun!"

Today, a similar legend known as the Firebird lives on in Slavic folklore. In both traditions, the bird represents a sun symbol that brings well-being to those who hang one in their homes. They are often hung above the hearth, over the dining table, and above a child's crib. The movement of warm air in a house animates the wooden birds, causing them to rotate in a circle where they are hung.

In this bright and vivid Skybird image, the story of the Phoenix rising from its own ashes also comes to mind. In the coming together of these legends, there is a sense of singularity where everyone is watched over by the warmth of the sun. May this vibrant blue bird bring good luck into your own life and brighten a dark spot in your home.

  • Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality journals that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured, bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a binding technique that is economical for the manufacturer but eventually leads to page loss), but instead, they are all sewn.

All Paperblanks journals are bound using one of two methods. They are either hand-sewn using 'Coptic' binding, which dates back to 4th-century Egypt, or Smythe sewn, the most durable binding technique, which allows the journal to open flat without any page loss.

All Paperblanks journals use acid-free, archival-quality, and high-opacity fine laid writing paper. Their journals also include a ribbon page marker and an inner pocket inside the back cover to store your notes.
