  • Our Safavid Indigo design reproduces a leather filigree pattern featuring handcrafted motifs, maintaining the elegance and style of the Islamic Golden Age even in our modern context. Originally released in a classic brown leather look, this new dark blue color scheme pays homage to the deepest shade of Persian Blue. This indigo hue was a popular color used in the art and architecture of this artistic era.

Associated with this era of artistic excellence, Persian Safavid-style designs represented a high point in the art of the book. These bindings often featured central designs of medallions, quadrants, floral and animal motifs, pentagonal flap closures, and elaborately decorated "doublures" (inside covers) featuring cut leather, colored paper, and elegant gilded creations. Above all, symmetry is the hallmark of this style. The original binding of this particular design used reddish-brown goatskin, real gold, lacquer, and paint to achieve balance in its creation.

Dating back to the 17th century, this work of art comes from the rich tradition of craftsmanship inspired by Shah Abbas the Great, the Fifth Shah of the Safavid Dynasty, during the period known as the Islamic Golden Age of Art (750 to the 16th century). He recognized the commercial benefits of encouraging the arts, and thus tiling, pottery, and textile crafts flourished. Illuminated manuscripts also became a thriving industry, and great attention was paid to the craft of bookbinding and design.

Although Safavid rule ended in 1736, they left a great and lasting legacy by reviving and establishing Persia as both an economic and artistic powerhouse. Among the many jewels of this ancient era and culture, decorative bookbinding shines particularly bright, and we are honored to bring it back into daily life with our Safavid series.

  • Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality notebooks that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured, bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a binding technique that is economical for the manufacturer but eventually leads to page loss) but are instead all sewn.

All Paperblanks notebooks are bound using two methods. They are either hand-sewn using 'Coptic' binding, which originated in 4th-century Egypt, or Smythe-sewn, which is the most durable binding technique, allowing the notebook to lay flat without losing pages.

All Paperblanks notebooks use acid-free, archival-quality, high-opacity, fine laid writing paper. Their notebooks also feature a ribbon page marker and an inner pocket inside the back cover to store your notes.
