  • Nobility and elegance reach new heights in this lush design. The binding, originally crafted by Queens' Binder A, one of the most prolific binders of the Restoration period, held a copy of Richard Allestree's The Government of the Tongue. The balance of negative space and intricate elements, such as the magnificent frame and harmonious small stars, makes it a shining jewel of 17th-century English bookbinding.

“Queens' Binder” was a name given by G.D. Hobson to a small group of English binders during the “Golden Age of English Bookbinding.” These binders were known for having pointillé outlines rather than the floral flourishes that were much more common at the time. Modern research indicates that the Queens' Binder was actually four separate shops, and even individual binders like “A” could represent multiple artisans.

While the name or names of the binder known as “A” remain unknown, it is thought that at least one of the artists was William Nott, a significant figure in the book trade who operated as a bookseller, stationer, and publisher. The quality of the bindings attributed to A varies significantly, but there is no question regarding the excellence of this particular piece. The Government of the Tongue was an important work in its own day, and as provost of Eton College, Allestree could demand the highest quality for its publication.

Today, the original binding is part of the Henry Davis gift at the British Library. We are delighted to have the opportunity to return it to its original glory for this Paperblanks design.

  • Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality notebooks that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured and bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a binding technique that is economical for the manufacturer but eventually leads to page loss) but are instead all sewn.

All Paperblanks notebooks are bound using one of two methods. They are either hand-sewn using 'Coptic' binding, which originated in 4th-century Egypt, or Smyth sewn, which is the most durable binding technique and allows the notebook to open flat without page loss.

All Paperblanks notebooks use acid-free, archival-quality, and high-opacity fine laid writing paper. Their notebooks also feature a ribbon page marker and an interior pocket inside the back cover for storing your notes.
