  • Azulejos (meaning "small polished stone") are painted, glazed ceramic tiles that date back to 13th-century Portugal, when they were used inside buildings during the Gothic period. Today, we see these decorative tiles in a wide variety of buildings, from monasteries, palaces and restaurants to bars, train stations and family homes. The designs on the tiles are often related to the unique history of the building, and individual pieces often form an elaborate mosaic.

There are countless wonderful examples of these beautiful tiles all over Portugal, most in the original blue and white colour scheme that was in vogue during the "Age of Discovery" (from the 15th to the late 18th century). São Bento Train Station in Porto, the Palace of Buçaco and many stops on the Lisbon Metro are among the most famous places known for azulejo art.

The design reproduced here is taken from traditional tiles adorning the facades of various old houses in Porto. Elaborately decorated, these tiles serve not only as decoration but also represent an important part of Portuguese culture and tradition. They hold within them the stories of their country and its past.

With our cover design, we celebrate this enduring symbol of Portuguese culture and tradition.

  • Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality journals that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured, bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a binding technique that is economical for the manufacturer but eventually leads to page loss), but instead, they are all sewn.

All Paperblanks journals are bound using one of two methods. They are either hand-sewn using 'Coptic' binding, which originated in 4th-century Egypt, or Smyth sewn, the most durable binding technique, which allows the journal to open flat without page loss.

All Paperblanks journals use acid-free, archival-quality, high-opacity, heavy-stock writing paper. The journals also feature a ribbon marker and an internal storage pouch in the back cover to hold your notes.
