  • The timeless beauty of an antique leather journal is brought to the modern day on the cover of this intricately decorated, leather-like cover.

Since the late 16th century, high-quality Morocco leather has been prized for use in luxury bookbindings due to its strength and ability to be gilded. For our Ochre design, we were inspired by the background color of our Rembrandt 350th Anniversary Special Edition journal. With a delicate leaf pattern set against a gold background, this cover pays homage to the art of gold tooling that was originally brought to Europe via thriving trade routes leading to the East.

When we first began making Paperblanks journals, we found a fragment of William Shakespeare’s handwriting and knew it could make an inspiring journal cover. Soon after, we added designs featuring the writings of Ernest Hemingway and Jane Austen, creating a series that would become our Embellished Manuscripts Collection. These initial covers were minimalist designs featuring literary manuscripts written in black ink on beige paper. Eventually, our creative impulses began to take over, and we tried playing with the design by adding a gold frame.

Starting from a photograph of a small piece of magnificent gold ornamentation, our Art Director created a full frame for the Shakespeare manuscript and highlighted it with a burnt orange background. Of course, our curiosity about what could happen next didn't end there! By removing the manuscript, we immediately saw the possibilities for a design inspired by classic Renaissance leather bindings. And thus, our core Old Leather Collection was born.

Today, we are free to play with the frame shape and background color, and that initial beige and black design continues to form the backbone of two of our most enduringly popular collections.

  • Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality journals that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured and bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a binding technique that, while economical for the manufacturer, eventually leads to page loss) but are instead all sewn.

All Paperblanks journals are bound using one of two methods. They are either hand-sewn using 'Coptic' binding, which dates back to 4th-century Egypt, or Smyth sewn, which is the most durable binding technique and allows the journal to lay flat without losing pages.

All Paperblanks journals use acid-free, archival-quality, high-opacity, fine-laid writing paper. Their journals also feature a ribbon marker and an inner pocket inside the back cover for storing your notes.
