Our Kuro cover showcases a reproduction of an original "katagami" artwork. This specific design is an example of a katagami stencil made from mulberry bark and persimmon juice. The word Kuro means "dark" or "black" in Japanese and is the perfect title for this shadowy design.

Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality journals that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured, bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a technique that is economical for the manufacturer but eventually leads to page loss) but are instead all sewn.
All Paperblanks journals are bound using two methods. They are either hand-sewn using 'Coptic' binding, which originated in 4th-century Egypt, or Smythe sewn, which is the most durable binding technique and allows the journal to open flat without page loss.
All Paperblanks journals use acid-free, archival-quality, high-opacity laid writing paper. Their journals also include a ribbon marker and an internal storage pouch inside the back cover for your notes.

To add a bit of edge to the look of finely crafted leather, we added a richly saturated dark blue background.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhen we first started making Paperblanks journals, we found a fragment of William Shakespeare’s handwriting and knew it could make an inspiring journal cover. Soon after, we added designs featuring the writings of Ernest Hemingway and Jane Austen, creating a series that would become our Embellished Manuscripts Collection. These first covers were minimalist designs featuring literary manuscripts written in black ink on beige paper. Eventually, our creative impulses took over and we tried to play with the design by adding a gold frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eStarting with a photograph of a gorgeous small piece of gold filigree, our Art Director created a full frame for the Shakespeare manuscript and highlighted it with a burnt orange background. Of course, our curiosity about what could happen next didn’t end there! When we removed the manuscript, we immediately saw the possibilities for a design inspired by classic Renaissance leather bindings. To add a bit of edge to the look of finely crafted leather, we added a richly saturated dark blue background.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhen we first started making Paperblanks journals, we found a fragment of William Shakespeare’s handwriting and knew it could make an inspiring journal cover. Soon after, we added designs featuring the writings of Ernest Hemingway and Jane Austen, creating a series that would become our Embellished Manuscripts Collection. These first covers were minimalist designs featuring literary manuscripts written in black ink on beige paper. Eventually, our creative impulses took over and we tried to play with the design by adding a gold frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eStarting with a photograph of a gorgeous small piece of gold filigree, our Art Director created a full frame for the Shakespeare manuscript and highlighted it with a burnt orange background. Of course, our curiosity about what could happen next didn’t end there! When we removed the manuscript, we immediately saw the possibilities for a design inspired by classic Renaissance leather bindings.
