Our Nocturnelle design is a reproduction of an antique French binding, based on a cover created in 1829 by publishers A. & W. Galignani for The Poetical Works of Thomas Moore.
Nowhere is the weight and majesty of history more tangible than in the book arts. The 19th century brought several innovations to the art of bookbinding, both functionally and aesthetically. Advancements in mechanization allowed publishers to begin producing books on a large scale while remaining true to the elegant, decorative beauty of cloth or leather-bound volumes.
This cover evokes the fine Moroccan leather preferred for the bindings of the era and the structural integrity, careful finishing, and raised spine revered by discerning book lovers. The ornaments reflect the architectural trends of the period, such as rosettes, spirals, and stylized leaves. The rich tones and textural subtlety found in our reproduction create a striking interpretation of the original binding.
This 19th-century Parisian block binding was originally crafted from dark blue leather with gold tooling, which were distinct characteristics of the Restoration bindings of the period. John Anthony and William Galignani were sons of a courier father who instilled in them an appreciation for languages and the written word. After his father's death, John Anthony opened the first Galignani bookstore in Cambrai, France, before returning to his family in Paris. The two brothers, as A. and W. Galignani, began a business in Paris of reprinting English books, including the publication of this version of Thomas Moore’s poetical works.
Thomas Moore (not to be confused with the philosopher and saint Sir Thomas More) was an Irish poet and entertainer, and his Irish Melodies became highly popular at the beginning of the 19th century. Today, he is recognized as Ireland's National Bard, much as Robert Burns is to Scotland and William Shakespeare is to England. It is therefore fitting that his poetical works would be encased in such an impressive binding.

Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality notebooks that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured and bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a binding technique that is economical for the manufacturer but eventually leads to page loss), but instead, they are all sewn.
All Paperblanks notebooks are bound using two methods. They are either hand-sewn using 'Coptic' binding, which originated in 4th-century Egypt, or Smyth sewn, which is the most durable binding technique and allows the notebook to open flat without page loss.
All Paperblanks notebooks use fine, laid writing paper that is acid-free, archival quality, and has high opacity. Their notebooks also feature a ribbon page marker and an inner pocket inside the back cover to store your notes.
