These bindings typically featured central designs of medallions, quadrants, floral and animal motifs, pentagonal flap closures, and elaborately decorated \"doublures\" (inner covers), as well as exquisite creations made with cut leather, colored paper, and gilding. Above all, symmetry is the hallmark of this style. The original binding of this particular design used reddish-brown goatskin, real gold, lacquer, and paint to achieve balance in its creation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eDating back to the 17th century, this work of art comes from the rich tradition of craftsmanship inspired by Shah Abbas the Great, the Fifth Shah of the Safavid Dynasty, during the period known as the Golden Age of Islamic Art (from 750 to the 16th century). He recognized the commercial benefits of encouraging the arts, and thus tile work, pottery, and textile crafts flourished.
