John Anthony and William Galignani were sons of a courier father who instilled in them an appreciation for languages and the written word. After his father's death, John Anthony opened the first Galignani bookstore in Cambrai, France, before returning to his family in Paris. The two brothers, as A. and W. Galignani, began a business in Paris of reprinting English books, including the publication of this version of Thomas Moore’s poetical works.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThomas Moore (not to be confused with the philosopher and saint Sir Thomas More) was an Irish poet and entertainer, and his Irish Melodies became highly popular at the beginning of the 19th century. Today, he is recognized as Ireland's National Bard, much as Robert Burns is to Scotland and William Shakespeare is to England.
