Crafted with gold, silver, and enamel and embellished with jewels, this ornate binding stands as a powerful manifestation of art as a vehicle for faith.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eProduced in a German workshop near Salzburg between 750 and 800 AD, this gold and jeweled binding now stands proudly at the Morgan Library in New York, heralded as one of the collection’s most important acquisitions. J.P. Morgan purchased the illuminated manuscript in 1901, and it was this exquisitely designed book that set a new direction for many subsequent additions to his collections.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe Lindau binding is an archetypal representation of book publishing from the early to mid-9th century, where the overall effort focused more on ornamentation than content. During this period, the majority of the citizenry would not have known how to read, but they would have been drawn to the book cover as a metaphor for the knowledge within.
