To add a bit of edge to the look of finely crafted leather, we added a richly saturated dark blue background.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhen we first started making Paperblanks journals, we found a fragment of William Shakespeare’s handwriting and knew it could make an inspiring journal cover. Soon after, we added designs featuring the writings of Ernest Hemingway and Jane Austen, creating a series that would become our Embellished Manuscripts Collection. These first covers were minimalist designs featuring literary manuscripts written in black ink on beige paper. Eventually, our creative impulses took over and we tried to play with the design by adding a gold frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eStarting with a photograph of a gorgeous small piece of gold filigree, our Art Director created a full frame for the Shakespeare manuscript and highlighted it with a burnt orange background. Of course, our curiosity about what could happen next didn’t end there! When we removed the manuscript, we immediately saw the possibilities for a design inspired by classic Renaissance leather bindings.
